The French who passed through this area in the late 1600’s called it l'obscurité or “the darkness”. The swamp was not the type of place that many would settle in, as the land was not optimal for farming and the swamp creatures were too dangerous for settlers. It was not until the end of 1693 that the area found itself settled by a group from the English colonies who had fled Salem during the uprising of the Salem witch trials in order to escape persecution and execution. It did not matter that most of the people put to death in Salem were innocent of the crimes of which they were accused; it mattered only that they were accused at all.
